Barbizon
This French school of naturalistic landscape painting began to flourish in the 1830s and continued into the 20th century.  It gets its name from the village of Barbizon which is about 30 miles southeast of Paris in the Forest of Fontainbleau.  These artists rejected the traditional Academic formula for landscape painting which saw nature as a studied backdrop for historic and dramatic activity, royal domestic life or mythological tableaus.  Instead, they painted within the forest interiors, directly from nature or 'en plein air', peasant life and nature with unprettified simplicity. They were remarkable colorists who showed the dappled and shimmering details of the forest whereas the Academic ideal esteemed high finish and contrasting colors.  Among the best known Barbizon artists are Millet, Daubigny, Harpignies and Corot.
