English School
There is a continuous tradition of painting in England which is reflected in Nikolous Pevsner’s landmark 1956 book titled The Englishness of English Art and more recently Sir Roy Strong’s 2000 book The Spirit of Britain: A Narrative History of the Arts. Until the 18th century the finest English artists usually came from Flanders. By the late 18th and 19th centuries English born and trained artists were specializing in portraits, landscapes, marine paintings and history and English genre subjects. English artists show a fondness for underscoring the character of an animal in a painting whether it is a dog or a cow or horse. English art portrays the coast and sea, and because England is a nation with four distinct seasons, the theme of weather and weather effects like changing light are found in English landscapes and marine scenes. Many English paintings depict village life of every kind, and artists try to show the continuity of the past with the present in these scenes and landscapes. The artists also loved gothic ruins, melancholic and open wilderness and, interestingly, small, private gardens.
