Born in Paris on January 3, 1925, André Quellier was first noticed in 1951 for his work for the Katherine Dunham Ballet, work now on permanent exhibition in the foyer of the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées. Since then he has become one of Europe’s finest Fantastic Realist painters, and his monumental collection of 360 oil paintings representing the Fables of the seventeenth century writer Jean de la Fontaine (1621-1695) are permanently on exhibit at the Musée des Fables et des Contes de la Fontaine in Beziers. Five years in the making, Quellier’s paintings represent La Fontaine’s Fables and are based on the work of La Fontaine’s illustrator Jean-Baptiste Oudry (1686-1755) who completed his work shortly before he died. Quellier’s paintings were shown in Lyon in 1995 at the tricentennial of La Fontaine’s death.
