Shakespeare
The plays of William Shakespeare (1564-1616) have provided artists since the mid 18th century with scenes to visually explore character, present costumes and settings and stimulate discussions among other artists, critics and devotees of a particular play.  The artist can probe the innermost aspirations, desires or ambitions of a person. Or the artists can reveal an amusing or perplexing situation. Some paintings include portraits of famous actors in their Shakespearean roles. The late 18th and 19th centuries were the heyday of historical and literary painting, and Shakespeare’s written word took visual form in paintings for contemporary audiences.
