Born in London in 1902, Strevens attended classes at the Regent Street Polytechnic and later at Heatherly's Art School, although he was largely self-taught. He received initial acclaim in 1947 and since his first success he exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and the Paris Salon. Although his real interest lied in flower painting and portraiture, Strevens is also known for his colorful presentation of the Edwardian and Victorian eras which he admitted gave expression to his incurable romanticism and devotion to the past. He also had quite an affinity for the French Impressionists.
