Watercolor is a paint of which the liquid is a water dispersion of the various binding materials. The British have especially excelled at watercolor painting. Depending on the artist, watercolors can be used in a colorful, meticulous manner or in a loose, rapid way. They can reveal a subject with graphic detail – actual events, buildings and geographical sites – or present simple scenes within which blemishes and defects have been worked into the final composition. Among the finest watercolors are marine subjects that show the contrasts of land, water and sky, architectural views outside or inside a structure which emphasis shadow and bright light, rural genre scenes, military themes, miniatures, topographical sites and even portraits.
